Built in 1934, Rosenwald Hall was the first academic
building constructed on Dillard’s campus, and
is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Known originally as the Library and Academic building,
the two-story, 30,000 sf structure housed a chapel (in
the center wing), a library (in the basement), general
classrooms, science laboratories, and administrative
offices. The symmetrical building has a large portico,
with four plain, Tuscan columns at the front entrance.
The exterior elevation features stacked, wood awning
windows alternating with brick veneer walls on top of
an expanded brick base. The hipped roof has a red clay
tile, with chimneys, and ventilators into the attic
space. The main lobby is covered with a green, marble
wainscot and terrazzo floor.
During the 2002-03 academic year, Clement & Wynn
assisted Dillard University in preparing the application
to the Louisiana State Preservation Office toward listing
Rosenwald on the National Register. Clement & Wynn
also worked with the University to submit a grant proposal
to the National Park Service for the proposed $3 million
rehabilitation of the building. Improvements include
a new clay tile room, an elevator to make the building
handicapped accessible, upgrading the toilets, a mechanical
equipment room, and conversion of the attic into office
space. |
