Clement & Wynn was responsible for the program
management of this 32,320 SF center for the University
of Georgia’s Food Safety and Quality Enhancement.
The center is located at the Georgia Experiment Station
in Griffin, Georgia, a town of 25,000 located in the
metropolitan area about 40 miles south of downtown Atlanta.
This project included an addition to the existing Melton
Food Science Building also known as the Food Safety
and Quality Enhancement Laboratory.
The two main goals of the center are 1) to provide
the safety of foods through the development of methods
for controlling growth of harmful micro-organisms and
2) to enhance quality and storage stability of food
products through modification of their chemical and
physical properties.
The addition provides space for research laboratories,
offices, a conference room, a Center Director’s
office complex (which includes a Center Director’s
office, administrative offices, and a meeting room).
The building consists of an upper level and lower level.
The upper level is at the main floor level of the existing
building, where openings in the walls of the existing
library/conference room and the #2 incubator create
a link to the new addition.
The construction of the addition took place while the
existing building was still in use. Renovations were
required in the existing building, primarily to link
utilities and access between new and existing spaces.
