Founded in 1937, the Southern Education Foundation
(SEF) is a non-profit agency dedicated to promoting
access to equal, quality education for racial minorities
and others disadvantaged in the American South.
The offices for SEF are located in a historic two-story,
building with an all brick facade. Originally erected
as the Southern School Book Depository, the design of
the building was produced by historical Architect J.
Neel Reid of Hentz, Reid & Adler.
As with preservation of its educational support programs,
SEF has assessed that the preservation of the historic
building housing their offices is crucial. In 2003,
Clement & Wynn was brought on to provide professional
project management services toward rehabilitating the
exterior of SEF’s building.
SEF has elected to initiate the rehabilitation process
with repairs to the brick and wood storefront facade.
This work includes the removal and replacement ofthe
existing lintels, storefront glazing and doors, as well
as repairs to the brick masorny and terra cotta coping.
The project is scheduled for completion in June 2004.
